Following the steam train from Mallaig

After arriving on the ferry at Mallaig we set off towards Oban.

A bonus was seeing the steam train leave Mallaig and we followed it down the valleys.

The Jacobite Steam train in Mallaig ready to depart.

Quite strange following a train so closely.

Can’t keep up with it….

Sadly wasn’t able to stop at the GlenFinnen viaduct, car park overflowing.

Left the Outer Hebrides

Heading back to the mainland after a lovely time on the outer Hebrides.

Enjoyed the outer Hebrides. Each island very different.

Lewis, we didn’t spend very much time in stornoway. Nice, but the island quite flat and boggy.

Harris, probably my favourite, some spectacular hills. Great scenery. Would come back again.

North Uist, good, probably the best bit was Berneray a beautiful island joined by a causeway, a 2 mile long sandy beach with a handful of people on it.

South Uist a little too flat and not a lot there for our interests.

overall brilliant will come back.

SS Politician

SS politician ran aground in the outer Hebrides  in 1941. It carried a large quantity of whisky. It inspired the book/film ‘whisky galore’. So I half expected a period pub.

Sadly the pub on Eriskay south of Uist was a disappointment…

Good walk ending in a bog…

Went for a nice walk on South Uist. Sally dropped me off and arranged to meet me a little while later.

Always nice to walk up to a trig point. Although to be fair, South Uist isn’t exactly high.

About 100m from the van at the end of my walk, I was not watching what I was doing.

oops I went into a bog upto my waist…. Got out quite quickly. I was surprised how warm the water was. However don’t recommend it…. Stupid boy.

Bumped into a friend

Walking through the village of Tarbert in Harris, someone shouted my name.

Friends from church in Ashbourne, David & Lynda were there visiting their daughter. Not seen them for a while as they moved south a few years back.

It was a lovely surprise and we chatted for  quite a while.

Tarbert is also the home of Harris distillery. A very nice inviting place.
