This has been going for around 900 years, and it shows, v little health & safety constraints.
Lots of people having fun

Hard to spot the ball.

A bit muddy.

Ashbourne is getting ready for Shrovetide football. Shop windows are being protected.

Went to Aston Villa today with my son & a friend of his. Their plan was to stay over night in Birmingham and visit a few bars/clubs tonight. They booked the hotel rooms (non refundable) for the 25 March instead of the 25 February. Idiots
So they are now going to Birmingham in a months time for a night out….. not sure the extra train fare from Leeds is worth it.

Went to want Derby play away at Aston Villa.
Firstly the good bits, exclellent tran journey from Lichfield into Birmingham. First time I have been to New Street since it has been done up, they have done a very good job. Called at a pub for a drink & food, 5 mins from New Street. Again very good (Purecraft bar & kitchen). Lovely food, good choice of beers.
And then the bad bits. Two average teams played. I think it was Villa’s first home win this year, and we have achieved two draws all February. The facilities were poor/dire. Over 2000 away supporters, crammed into a small dingy concourse. Only one hatch with 2 people serving….. and no alcohol served. Given this was a premier team last year, I wonder what they spent the money on.
Lost 1:0, when we had 70% of the possession. Should have won it.

It’s probably 40 years since I have visited this ground, and I can’t say it’s improved very much.

One of our neighbours was driving along a local back route near Ashbourne when a tree fell on the car.
A branch went through the windscreen, through the passenger seat, and made a big dent in the floor panel. Pam was lucky to be alive, and if Albert had been in the passenger seat, he wouldn’t be alive today.
Very scary, really pleased Pam got out of the car relatively unscathed…..

Sally’s back home from hospital. Despite excellent care from the hospital, it’s good to have her back home.
The hardest part was getting her into the car to drive home (good job it wasn’t the Landy). Try and get into a car without bending your knee very much, it’s quite difficult……

Lovely time with Mary, David, Maria & Aidan.
Maria playing ping pong with daddy. Who is going to win?

After tea, it was Aidan’s football. He has improved a lot since the last time I saw him play.

He likes to get stuck in, maybe Derby should sign him up…..

Must be doing too much walking, I have worn out a rucksack. The shop assistant described it as ‘well used’.
So it gave me the excuse to buy a top of the range one. For people like me the new one is ‘feature rich’, it even has a whistle built in, quite sad.

The advantage of being a grandad, you can buy the grandkids things you wouldn’t normally buy.
